Description:  SBD 8187 pauses at Blossum Jct. with a southbound freight. this is the former SAL mainline, now known as the West Route of CSX. At this time, the Everett Sub south of Ogeechee is still in service, but the end was very near. I was told all Trains were rerouted to the A Line in November of 1985. Today mostly Pig trains, Coal Trains, and Amtrak run here. Freights use the A Line v ia Southover Yard.

Description:  What a surprise!!! F Units on a Train coming by Central Jct. Savannah, Georgia We were completely surprised as there was no talk on the Scanner about them...suddenly there they were!!! It is Summer 1986 and they are still wearing SBD Paint, but CSX has become "official" and indeed you WILL see CSX on the side of Boxcars, Hopper Cars, Flat Cars, and Locomotives!!! By September, these will be wearing the new CSX Paint scheme. WE consider trying to chase this Train, but it was a Pig Train, and there are numerous Traffic Lights in the area, so this had to be our only shot.

Description:  Southbound loaded Coal Train pauses at Spartanburg, SC for a crew change before heading south to Augusta. Diaster would strike only a few miles into the trip as lead Unit 8105 would die on the Ora grade. The Train would finially make it into Greenwood, SC 6 Hours later and get a Helper added. We followed this Train all the way back to Augusta. The crew barely made it to Augusta before going on the law!!!

Description:  This is just north of Kingsland, Georgia on the former Everett (Now Kingsland) Sub. The Train is the "Rocket" and has worked the former SAL line north from Jacksonville. It has completed its work here at Kingsland and is ready to roll north to Bladen where it will then turn west onto the Brunswick Sub for Waycross. The former SAL was severed and abandoned north of Thalmann to Riceboro in 1985. This Trackage will also be abandoned in less than 2 years. The Train still runs today via the nearby A Line.

Description:  Northbound freight led by SBD 5739 is about to cross the Diamond at Crawford, Florida. This portion of the former Gross Cutoff remains heavily used by CSX today. It was redesignated the Callahan Sub after the line was abandoned to Gross in late 1985. Missing from this location is the unique SAL Return to Train Signal, which was very common at Seaboard Crossings with other lines.

Description:  Chessie 5328 leads a short southbound Local at Maxville, Florida in July, 1988. This was my first trip down into Florida and it was nice to see a part of the SAL still alive and well. Notice the Double Pole Lines on the right. One was for Communications, and the other was for the CTC. Today, those Poles are long gone and the Woods have grown right up beside the Signals. The line is busier than ever as it is CSXs primary freight route in Florida. This view looks north towards Baldwin. Chessie Power began showing up soon after CSX became "official" in 1986.

It will set out some cars and pick up some too before continuing north towards Spartanburg. Yes, I remember it well. It was in Trains magazine. "You will never see CSX on the side of a Boxcar!!!" That didn't hold any water!!!

Description:  Northbound Pigs rolling through Folkston, Georgia This is my first trip to Folkston and I am amazed at all the Trains running here. The recent abandonment of the Dupont Subdivision as well as portions of the Gulf Coast Sub have resulted in many Trains being rerouted through Folkston. Notice the track on the right that extended through town. This spot is directly where the Folkston Platform would be constructed in 2001.

It is my first trip to Folkston and I am amazed at the number of Trains here. The Overpass will be completed in 1997, the Platform will get built in 2001, and the second main Track will be constructed late in 2003.

The Nahunta Sub is now very busy with Trains following the abandonment of the Dupont Sub as well as portions of the Gulf Coast Sub in Florida where many of these Trains had run prior to 1987. Folkston has changed a lot since this Picture. The 3rd Track here was removed in the 1990s. A new Highway Bypass was built just to the north, and in 2001, Folkston got a viewing Platform for Railfans.
